Shaking Off The Rust!

Coming back to work after a blissful three-week hiatus, I've discovered I'm not just rusty; I'm practically creaking! It's like my brain's still sipping cocktails in Noumea, stubbornly clinging to "Island Time." Curious (and slightly concerned) about this post-vacation sluggishness, I took to Google. My search for "Feeling rusty coming back to work after time off" yielded a comforting revelation – I'm in good company! 🏝🚲

So, if you are also feeling as rusty as a bike left out in the rain, here's how to oil up those work gears.

Acknowledge Your Feelings: First and foremost, understand that it's okay to feel this way. Accepting that it's a normal part of returning to work can alleviate some of the stress.

Roll Out of Bed: You've mastered the art of not working; now it's time to flip the script. Slide into those work clothes like they're PJs in disguise.

Tackle the Easy Stuff First: Think of it as a warm-up exercise before the real brain gymnastics begin. Check emails, organise your desk, and maybe solve a couple of problems before lunch.

Reconnect with Colleagues: Catching up with coworkers can not only update you on any changes or news you’ve missed but also re-establish those important work relationships. Plus, it’s always good to have a support network.

Goal Setting but Make It Fun: Set achievable goals for your first few days or weeks. As you start ticking these off, you'll gain more confidence and momentum. Slow and steady wins the race (or at least doesn't trip over its own feet).

Positive Vibes Only: Channel your inner cheerleader. Try to stay positive and remind yourself of your skills and achievements. Confidence can make a big difference in how quickly you readjust.

Feedback? More Like Feed-Forward: Don't hesitate to ask for feedback from your peers or supervisors. It can help you understand where you're doing well and what areas might need a little more focus. It’s all about learning the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Patience, Grasshopper: Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is getting back into work mode. It's natural to take some time to get back to your usual pace. Be patient with yourself during this period.

Self-Care Isn’t Just Hashtags: Ensure you're getting enough sleep, eating well, and taking breaks when needed. Physical well-being significantly impacts mental and professional performance.

Reflect on Your Break: Think about your time off – what you enjoyed, what you learned, and how you can bring any new perspectives or ideas to your work.

Remember, the feeling of being rusty is temporary. Soon enough, you'll find yourself back in your stride, ready to take on your professional challenges with renewed energy and perspective. Welcome back, and here's to a productive year ahead!
