Why you should start recruiting now instead of in January

Would you like a new team member for the new year?

But you have put off hiring till January?

You might not want to.

Hint: if you’re thinking that you want to kick the new year off on the right foot and hit the ground running by hiring new people then, you’re going to get left behind.

January is already a busy time in the recruitment world. With candidates often putting off finding a new job till the new year and organisations delaying recruitment drives till the same time, it becomes an extremely competitive period for all parties involved.

But it also delays a lot too.

And with delays, your new hire in January quickly becomes a new hire at the end of February or the start of March.

So what is the solution to this?

Kickstart the recruitment process now.

We’re 10 weeks from Christmas and there are a few things below that you need to take into consideration:

  1. The recruitment process = anywhere between 2-8 weeks
  1. Notice periods = typically 2-4 weeks

So, what this means is that if you start recruiting for the position now or in the next week, you’ve got a fair chance of getting your new hire started before the Christmas distractions hit full swing and everyone starts checking out.

It also means that when you all return from the break your November or December hire is already across everything and it’s all systems a go from the very start of the year.

But what about the fact that we mentioned that candidates aren’t that open to changing new roles at this time of year?

Yep, we thought you might bring that up.

Working within the recruitment world day in and day out we learn a thing or two about the workforce and what candidates are looking for in their next job and what are the factors that might influence them to make a move.

So, let's go back to what might help entice someone to join you at your company given the time of year.

It could be to offer a week (or two) of annual leave for them to have in lieu for the Christmas period.

It won’t only help out a new employee and get everyone off on the right foot, but also it could be a game changer and allow for your organisation to attract a quality new team member at this time of year, instead of competing against several others in the January period.

It’s a win-win really.
